Construction works for new synagogue starting in Gelsenkirchen

Today (23rd of august 2005) the construction works for a new synagoge started in Gelsenkirchen. The foundation-stone was laid on the 9th of November and the Bejt-Knesset shall be completed in the 9th of november 2006.
The building complex will have a synaguge, four flats, offices and social rooms. The sanctuary itself will be build in a mix of german liberal synagogue architecture (the bimah is directly in front of the Aron hakodesh) and orthodox elements (balcony for women).

The jewish community of Gelsenkirchen has about 450 members today.
